A former Hampshire scholar and Australia Under-19 representative, left-handed batsman Travis Head had a golden run of form at the start of the 2013-14 season that led South Australia coach Darren Berry to describe him as a future Test player. While he failed to pass three figures, Head posted consecutive scores of 92, 98 and 98 in the Sheffield Shield for South Australia to flag himself as one to watch. His breakthrough hundred finally came in the middle of 2014, an innings of 108 for the National Performance Squad in a 50-over match against South Africa A. Head made his international debut in a one-dayer against West Indies before making his maiden international century against Pakistan in front of his home crowd at the Adelaide Oval. In 2018, Head earned his first Test call up as part of the new look Australian side that faced Pakistan in the UAE.
In 2015, Head was named captain of the Redbacks and at the age of 21 became the state's youngest captain of all time.
