Match Update

Centuries by Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers set up a 34-run victory for South Africa despite a thrilling innings by Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi in the third one-day international at the Wanderers Stadium on Sunday.

Amla (122) and De Villiers (128) shared a world record third wicket partnership of 238 as South Africa made 343 for five after being sent in.

Pakistan, who were bowled out for 309 to slip 2-1 down in the series, had been in deep trouble when Afridi walked in at 132 for five but he gave his side hope as he thrashed 88 off 48 balls with seven sixes and five fours.

Afridi’s innings included some of the biggest sixes seen at the Wanderers.

One, after he had been bowled off a no-ball, was a mighty hit onto the roof of the four-tier Centenary stand which was last seen bouncing towards an adjacent golf course.

Match Preview

Here we go with the 3rd match of the 5-Match ODI series. As the series is leveled at 1-1, both Pakistan and South Africa are looking forward to take the lead as they move from Centurion to Johannesburg. The teams stay at Sandton, the richest place of Africa, which is half hour drive from Centurion and ten minutes from the Wanderers Stadium Johannesburg. The Sunday fixture will see South Africans appearing in unique, pink uniform in support of breast cancer awareness.

The series is leveled and both the teams will look to get into series lead. The Wanderers is ideal venue for fast bowlers but if there is even little ease for batsmen the match could be a run-fest. The ground has short boundaries too. Pakistan won the previous match comfortably but they shouldn’t overlook the mistakes they are making while selecting team. With Saeed Ajmal and Shahid Afridi, Pakistan look one spinner too many. In previous game, they got away with tactic of dropping a batsman for bowler, but in next matches this tactic could cost dearly. Bearing in mind, Pakistan have Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik as spin options, they must replace a specialist spinner with fast bowler and let Asad Shafiq or Umar Akmal back in team.

South Africa’s major concern is form of their middle order, Colin Ingram and Faf du Plesssis in particular. Sure Ingram scored century in series opener, but all through his ODI career, albeit its only 20 matches long, he has faltered after scoring big whereas du Plessis has played some fine Test and Twenty20 knocks but he is yet to bat a defining innings in 50-over Cricket.

Watch out for

There were lot of talks on Misbah-ul-Haq’s form as a batsman, for he hadn’t crossed a fifty in nearly 10 months. He finally scored one in the previous match but still there remains lot of doubt on his ODI form, presence in team, knowing he is nearing 40 and World Cup is two years away now. No one knows Johannesburg better than him. Its the venue where he flirted with hearts of Pakistan fans with that notorious scoop in the World T20 Final and just a month ago led Pakistan in a Test that saw them scoring their worst total (49) of all time.

Dale Steyn on his day can blow the best of batting line-ups away but his ODI form of late has been a concern. He has only 18 wickets in 17 matches in last two years and has not taken more than two wickets in a match during this period. Beyond shadow of doubt he is world number one in Test Cricket and the Proteas would want him to show some form in white ball cricket as well. Steyn is number one in ICC Rankings for Test Cricket but in ODIs he is at 17.

Weather and conditions

Rain has regularly visited Johannesburg in last few days. Forecast for Sunday is partly Sunny but a light shower can not be ruled out. However, its a day match and chances of rain appear to be strong in evening. The pitch is likely to favour batsmen and with short boundaries it could be a run fest.

The news is Mohammad Irfan might not be available for Sunday’s match and his place could go to another left-arm pacer, Wahab Riaz. There is no news from Pakistan camp regarding change in batting order, but they shouldn’t repeat mistake of leaving out Asad Shafiq or Umar Akmal

Pakistan (likely XI): 1) Nasir Jamshed, 2) Mohammad Hafeez, 3) Younis Khan, 4) Misbah-ul-Haq, 5) Shoaib Malik, 6) Kamran Akmal (wicketkeeper), 7) Shahid Afridi, 8) Junaid Khan 9) Umar Gul, 10) Saeed Ajmal, 11) Mohammad Irfan/Wahab Riaz

With Rory Klenveildt in doubt, South Africa are likely to retain the eleven which played at Centurion.

South Africa (likely XI): 1) Hashim Amla, 2) Graeme Smith, 3) Colin Ingram, 4) AB de Villiers (wicketkeeper), 5) Faf du Plessis, 6) Farhaan Behardien, 7) Ryan McLaren , 8) Robin Peterson, 9) Kyle Abbott, 10) Dale Steyn , 11) Lonwabo Tsotsobe

Stats and Trivia

– Shahid Afridi has not taken a wicket in ODIs in his last 35 overs (210 balls).

– Pakistan have played 8 ODIs at Johannesburg and won only one, which was against a weak team – the senior players decided not to play due to the tussle with WICB – from West Indies during Champions Trophy 2009.
