Match Update

Mohammad Hafeez put a poor Test series behind him to lead Pakistan to a crushing 95-run win in the second and final Twenty20 international against South Africa at SuperSport Park here on Sunday.

Hafeez hammered 86 and took three wickets for 25 runs, while fast bowler Umar Gul took five for six as South Africa collapsed to 100 all out in reply to Pakistan’s 195 for seven in what was effectively a series decider after the first match in Durban was washed out.

Appointed Pakistan’s captain in the shortest form of the game, Hafeez thrashed four sixes and nine fours off 50 balls and when he reached 73 became the first Pakistani to reach 1,000 runs in T20 internationals.

His innings was in dramatic contrast to his struggles in a three-match Test series which ended last week, in which he could score only 43 runs in six innings at an average of 7.16

A second wicket partnership of 83 off 48 balls with Ahmed Shehzad (46) set Pakistan on target for a massive total but the innings lost momentum when Hafeez was out off the third ball of the 17th over, with the total on 170.

Hafeez slipped as he stepped back in his crease to hit Rory Kleinveldt to the cover boundary and he dislodged his bails.

South Africa made a flying start, with AB de Villiers batting audaciously as the home side reached 48 for one in four overs.

But Gul then took four wickets in six balls, spread across two overs, as the match swung irrevocably in Pakistan’s favour.

In between, De Villiers was bowled by Mohammad Irfan for 36, made off 22 balls with two sixes and four fours.

Match Preview

Pakistan is all set to take on South Africa in the 2nd T20 match of the two matches with the first T20 abandoned due to rain without any ball bowled. Team winning the only T20 now takes the T20 trophy before the five-matches ODI series begins a week after on March 10. Earlier, South Africa beat Pakistan comprehensively clean sweeping the guests 3-0 in the test series..

Pakistan welcome back a galaxy of stars, with their brightest being Shahid Afridi. If the mercurial all-rounder brings his best side, it will be an immediate boost to them. Even though the selectors have Afridi under their radar, Afridi himself is cautious of his recent performances and have already confirmed that he will decide himself about his fate after this tour. Players like Misbah ul Haq and Younus Khan are out and Mohammad Hafeez will captain both matches. The Akmal brothers, with Kamran likely to keep, are also back. Junaid Khan has recovered from the thigh wound which kept him out of the last two Tests, and is available for selection. Ahmed Shehzad, Wahab Riaz and Shoaib Malik are other comebacks in squad for the upcoming matches. With this and more we are sure at least Pakistani fans will have something to cheer about for at least T20s and ODIs on this tour.

Pakistan’s probable are: 1 Nasir Jamshed, 2 Ahmed Shehzad, 3 Mohammed Hafeez (capt), 4 Umar Akmal, 5 Shoaib Malik, 6 Kamran Akmal (wk), 7 Shahid Afridi, 8, Wahab Riaz/Juniad Khan 9 Umar Gul, 10 Saeed Ajmal, 11 Mohammed Irfan

The 2nd T20 between Pakistan vs South Africa is being played at Buffalo Park, East London on 3rd March at 12:30 GMT, 14:30 local in East London and 17:30 PKT in Pakistan.

Series Updates

Pakistan and South Africa are all set to change gears as they face each other in two T20 matches after the three Tests match series which South Africa won 3-0.

Both South Africa and Pakistan hover in the middle of the Twenty20 rankings at the moment. While South Africa have never tasted the success of a major trophy, Pakistan have and were responsible for dumping South Africa out of the 2009 World Twenty20 – which they went on to win – and beating them in both other meetings at a major tournament.

That fact sums up the difference between the two teams’ approaches to limited-overs cricket. Pakistan have won when it matters, South Africa have when it doesn’t. Add that to the hosts’ current state of transition and Pakistan will see an opportunity to strike. They have with them a wealth of experience headed by Shahid Afridi while South Africa’s young squad includes only four Test regulars.

In essence, this is a clash between a team still experimenting with the format and one that has never had the same urgency to master it because they thrive in unpredictability. Pakistan can be expected to bring every element of themselves that has made the world fall in love with cricket over and over again: the late batting-order revival, the surprise wickets, the picture-perfect catch. If all those elements combine perfectly, it will make for good viewing.

Both teams have played each other six times in T20s, with each side winning three. Their last encounter was at the World Twenty20 in September last year, which Pakistan won.
