Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq hailed his country’s first win in a bilateral series against South Africa after they pulled off a thrilling one-run win in the second one-day international at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday.
Hashim Amla (98) and AB de Villiers (74) took South Africa to the brink of victory but South Africa could score only seven runs off the last nine balls, while losing two wickets.
Set to make 263 to win, they finished on 261 for six.
2nd ODI Preview
A confident Pakistan team, leading the three-match ODI series by 1-0, meets the hosts during the 2nd ODI today most desperate for a bilateral series win for the first time between the two teams.
On the other hand, South Africa who are playing their 500th ODI will also look to win this landmark match. Both teams have played 69 ODI matches so far and today’s match will make it 14 matches this year alone – the most any team has played against South Africa in a year.
Most of the matches between these two teams, however, have provided interesting contests. After struggling in the UAE, Pakistan pulled off a victory in their last two matches in South Africa, breaching the hosts’ fortress to complete a unique Cape Town double and taking a lead in the three-ODI series.
Again, it was the batting that let both sides down in the first ODI. Pakistan were restricted by a disciplined South African attack, leaving their bowlers with a below-par total to defend, but they were up to the task.
South Africa are still figuring out how to get their combinations right, now that Jacques Kallis has rejoined their ODI set-up. Pakistan will see it as the ideal opportunity to push for a maiden series win against them. Pakistan also need to put on bigger partnerships, but with an attack that gives them the edge this could be a chance for them to spoil South Africa’s milestone match.
The 2nd ODI between Pakistan vs South Africa is being played at St Georges Park, Port Elizabeth on 24th November at 10:00 local in Port Elizabeth, 08:00 GMT and 13:00 PKT in Pakistan.
