Senior Sri Lanka batsman Mahela Jayawardene has said they need to contain the “strong Indian batting” when the two teams meet in the Champions Trophy semifinal today.
India have won all their three group B matches while Sri Lanka won two of their Group A matches.
India had beaten Sri Lanka in a warm-up game leading up to the tournament.
The 2011 World Cup finalists were declared joint-winners of the 2002 Champions Trophy after the final was called off due to rain. The former skipper said that they are desperate to win.
On the other hand, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni said that Sri Lanka were a dangerous side and it was not possible to focus only on their two frontline batsmen ” Mahela Jayawardene or a Kumar Sangakkara” during the semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy slated for Thursday.
The two Asian rivals’ face-off here at the Sophia Gardens will be fifth in Britain. The only time India ended on the losing side was during a shocking defeat in the 1979 World Cup.
With rain clouds looming large over the match, Dhoni didn’t seem too bothered about the weather conditions.
But even if rain plays spoilsport, India will go through to the final on the account of having topped their group B. Sri Lanka had finished second behind England in group A.
