Match Preview

India is set to take on Australia for the third time in 3rd Test match at Mohali leading the four matches series 2-0. India will be withouth explosive opener Virender Sehwag who is dropped from the India squad for the last two Tests against Australia, after failing to impress the selectors.

The All-India Senior Selection Committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) axed the 34-year-old for his below-par performance in the first two Tests in Chennai and Hyderabad. Sehwag scored only 27 runs from three innings at an average of 9 in the first two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. His figures read 2, 19 and 6.

India currently lead the series 2-0. The third Test will be played at Mohali from March 14-18 and the fourth at Delhi from March 22-26.

The 14 member squad for the last test matches led by MS Dhoni: M.S. Dhoni (captain/wicketkeeper), Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Harbhajan Singh, R. Ashwin, Pragyan Ojha, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ajinkya Rahane, Ashok Dinda, Shikhar Dhawan, Ishant Sharma.

Virender Sehwag’s coach A.N. Sharma Thursday said the Delhi batsman is not an ordinary player and hoped his ward would make a strong comeback to reclaim his place in the Test side.

Former Australia opening batsman Matthew Hayden Thursday said the axing of India opener Virender Sehwag would probably be advantageous for the visiting team, making them happy.

Hayden added that he was sorry to hear about Sehwag being dropped as the Delhi batsman is one of his favourites.

In terms of bouncing back, Australia cricket captain Michael Clarke believes that his team can make a comeback in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India despite being 0-2 down in the four-match Test series.

“Yes, we can comeback in the series. If we can win the third Test in Mohali then we have a chance to make it 2-2. Had there been a fifth Test, I am sure we would have won the series 3-2,” Clarke told mediapersons here.

Clarke admitted that India performed much better as a unit than his team.

“India have been playing really good. They have proved better in all departments of the game – batting, bowling and fielding. But we have learned a lot from our mistakes in the first two Tests. Now we are going to the third Test as a more experienced team. We know its going to be tough but it’s in our nature not to give up. Australia will fight till the end.

“We offer no excuses for losing. Credit goes to India for playing better cricket,” added the 31-year-old.

Asked about India opener Virender Sehwag’s axing from the Test squad, Clarke said that the explosive opener has the talent and ability to make a comeback to the Indian team.

“I shouldn’t be speaking on selection of Indian players as I remained too focussed on the Australian team but Virender is a fantastic cricketer in all three formats of the game. I am sure he would be back in the team,” said the middle-order batsman.

Clarke paid a visit to the Taj Mahal Thursday with his wife. When asked about the experience, Clarke said: “It was great and magnificent. After all, it’s one of the seven wonders in the world.”
